26 September 1861 - Fourth Regiment

The Fourth Regiment Vermont Volunteers was mustered into the service of the United States on Saturday last by Lieut. George H. Higbee of the United States Army.  This regiment is the largest of the four sent into the field from Vermont, and we are happy to record the fact that not a single man of them all refused or hesitated to take the oath.  The following is a correct list of the Field, Staff, and Commissioned Company Officers belonging to the regiment, together with the number of non-commissioned officers and privates in the several companies, as appears from the rolls of the mustering-in officer:

Commissioned Field and Staff Officers.
Colonel - Edwin H. Stoughton, of Bellow Falls;
Lieut. Col. - Harvey N. Worthen, of Bradford;
Major - John C. Tyler, of Brattleboro;
Adjutent - Charles B. Stoughton, of Bellow Falls;
Quartermaster - John H. Cushman, of Bennington;
Surgeon - Samuel J. Allen, of Hartford;
Assistant Surgeon - Willard A. Childs, of Castleton....

...Company "I" from Wilmington and Jamaica.

1st Lieut. - Levi M. Tucker of Halifax;
2nd Lieut. - Albert A. Allard of Wilmington.
Non-commissioned officers 15; privates 83; total 101
