Census of 1776
Maryland State Archives S961-7
Dorchester County, Transquakin Hundred

In 1776, Maryland took a Census to determine its population and what was owed towards the Revolutionary War debt.  This Census listed the head of household and the number of white males and females broken down by age and the number of negroes.  At the time of the 1776 Census, Dorchester County was divided in three geographic areas called Hundreds.  Hundreds were divisions within a county established for taxation and other purposes.  The New Market area was part of the Transquakin Hundred during this Census.  Due to the large size of the table presented, I have broken down this Census into 6 pages with  about 50 names each.  The landowners associated with the New Market area are mainly on this pages 2 and 3.
