1838 Assessment List

Dorchester County Commissioners of the Tax
Assessment List
Maryland State Archives C684-6
Election District 2

The 1838 Tax Assessment List is the earliest known tax assessment list surviving for District 2 (New Market District) of Dorchester County.  Tax Assessment lists exist as early as 1831 for other districts in Dorchester County.  The District 2 tax assessment lists were not separated by East New Market Corporation from 1838 through 1848.  For 1838 I transcribed every listing for District 2.  The name the person taxed is followed by the value of his/her Real Estate and the value of his/her Personal Estate (personal estate includes livestock, securities, store inventories, and valuable items, such as carriages, certain types of furniture, watches, etc.)
