Harry Wright Newman was an accomplished author, genealogist, and historian, very well known in Maryland for his extensive work documenting the genealogy of Maryland families. He authored his first book in 1933 and his last in 1983 — a career spanning five decades. A compiled bibliography of many of his books is available here.

Many of Mr. Newman's books can be found in selected libraries across the country, and nearly every title he authored is cited somewhere on the internet. Despite the extensive work he did to document the history of others, very little personal information about Mr. Newman existed in print — prompting some original census research on his life.

Obituary
Baltimore Sun  ·  23 April 1983

Harry Wright Newman, who was 89 and lived in Annapolis, died early Saturday morning at Anne Arundel General Hospital after suffering a heart attack. He retired in the 1950s after serving many years as a commercial attaché at a number of American embassies abroad. Fond of traveling, he made vacation tours of Europe both before and after his retirement. He was educated at George Washington University, Georgetown University, and Cambridge University in England.

An avid horseman, Mr. Newman was a cavalryman with the District of Columbia National Guard unit fighting Pancho Villa's forces on the Mexican border before WWI. He served as an infantryman during WWI. As soon as he retired, Mr. Newman began to pursue his life's passion — the genealogy of Maryland families and their history.

He was a member of the Society of the War of 1812, the Society of Colonial Wars, and the Sons of the Revolution. He was also a member of the Society of the Cincinnati. The night before he died, he attended the Society's annual dinner at the Maryland Club.

His parents were Harry Anderson and Annie Wright Newman. He had two brothers: Howard E. Newman, a surgeon in Washington, D.C., and Alfred M. Newman, who worked for the FBI under J. Edgar Hoover in Washington, D.C. After the death of his mother, his father remarried — at which time Mr. Newman left home to pursue his interests.
