Mary Titus Webster House

Key date analysis:

In 1846 this property was described as being in the occupancy of Dr. J. E. Hooper.  Usually, this would mean that Dr. J.E. Hooper lived in a house was on the lot.  However, this property was described as a unimproved lot from 1852 to 1872.  So either the dwelling was torn down, destroyed or moved by 1852, or Dr. J.E. Hooper was leasing the land without a dwelling.  After the property was purchased in 1796 by Thomas Jackson, he passed it to his daughter, Mary Jackson who married William Harrison.  William Harrison passed the property to his children, William E. Harrison, and Elizabeth Ann Harrison.  Elizabeth Ann Harrison married Thomas B. Sherman.

In 1872, Thomas B. Sherman sold the property to Joseph W. Buck.  The 1872 tax entry for Thomas B. Sherman describes the property as an unimproved lot.  The 1873 tax entry for Joseph W. Buck describes the property as a lot and new dwelling.

The 1872 house was likely moved to the back of the property when the current house was built on the front of the lot in 1929.  The new house was built in 1929 per Brian Tolley and the current tax records.  A 1943 deed excepts from the conveyance "a three room house on the rear of the lot with the right to remove the same at any time on or before 1 January 1944."  Brian Tolley reports that the original three room house was demolished.

Who built it:

There may have been another structure here that was built between 1796 and 1840 and moved or demolished by 1852.  Joseph W. Buck built a house here around 1872.  This house was moved back on the property in 1929 and probably demolished in 1944.  Mary Titus Webster built the current house in 1929.

Longest Residents:

David W. & Virginia Tolley 33 years.

More Research:

Was the 1872 house indeed torn down or could it have been removed to a location elsewhere in town?
